I have been designing web sites for over 14+years now. About 10 years ago I made a commitment to design according to the W3C standards for html. I am glad I made that decision. It has allowed me to keep up to date with the changes with HTML and CSS. The changes that came with html5 and CSS3 allowed designers to approach website design with a responsive approach. This approach addressed the reality that the web was being viewed more and more by mobile devices.

1. What Is Responsive Web Design?

Responsive web design, or RWD, is a web design approach designed to deliver a fluid web site that automatically adjusts to fit the size of whatever browser or device is viewing it. RWD provides easy reading and navigation across a variety of devices, such as a tablet, mobile  phone, or desktop computer.

2. Why is Responsive Web Design Important?

With the many mobile devices accessing the web, responsive web design is becoming increasingly important due to its ability to fit the screen-size of any device viewing online content. The ability of RWD to recognize the optimal screen size and adjust to it provides the best possible user experience and allows users to view your content on any device and have it formatted properly.

3. The Future of Responsive Web Design.

More and more devices are being designed and released that can access the web and view web sites. Your online content is not just being accessed and viewed by laptops and desktops anymore, it’s being viewed by mobile phones, tablets, and other devices. Responsive web design is essential to allow these devices to view your content the way you intended. Imagine if you had to create completely new styles or even web sites for every single device that users might use to view your content. Responsive web design allows for a one-size-fits-all approach that will keep your web sites current and easily readable for the future.

EM Web Design takes a responsive approach to our web design projects. If your website has not been updated within the past 5 years, then chances are your website is not mobile friendly and that means you are giving a poor user experience to the 30% of web surfers that are using a tablet device or smaller to view websites. Here are some projects that we worked on recently that includes a responsive web design. You can test them by resizing your browser to a tablet or phone size and see how the content reacts to the change in viewport size.
